In this event, the legendary SalMar Construction will be demonstrated and situated at the center of a discussion led by David Rosenboom about the uniqueness of this electronic instrument and how Salvatore Martirano’s composing practices influenced a generation of practitioners in experimental music. The compositional frameworks employed in some of Martirano’s related earlier and later works will also be explored, along with examples of his approaches to improvisation and collaboration.

Event structure:

Opening with an introductory note by David Rosenboom – student and lifelong friend of Salvatore Martirano.

After a brief welcome to the audience and introduction of this event’s topics, a video compiled by John Martirano will be shown that contains commentary on Salvatore Martirano spoken by some major figures in American contemporary music.

Live performance on the SalMar Construction will ensue via remote telelink to the instrument’s location in the Sousa Archives and Center for American Music.

Then David Rosenboom will then talk about some of the radical implications of the SalMar Construction for the evolution of how we might think of musical instruments today, including remote demonstration of a few key technical concepts.

*In parallel with this event, the Sousa Archives and Center for American Music will provide an exhibition of historical electronic musical instruments from its Martirano and Experimental Music studios collection, along with related, influential materials of particular relevance to this program.

A longtime collaborator of Martirano, poet Michael Holloway (performed gas-masked politico for the famous L's G.A, 1967), will then deliver a brief reading, transitioning the program toward a panel discussion.

The final point of the evening will be a panel discussion between David Rosenboom and Benjamin Grosser (both students of Martirano) themed as “How is Salvatore Martirano’s work, and influence generally contextualized today in the history of American experimental music, and how should it be appropriately referenced now?”
